Feature - Motion is Momentum

Get your motor runnin'
Head out on the highway
Lookin' for adventure
And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
And explode into space

~Steppenwolf, Born to be Wild

Its no surprise the NYT reported that Evangelical churches are having a rush of new parishioners. We all need faith in unstable times. These days it’s almost impossible to hold a vision of a better tomorrow. We move between fear and hope. “Yes we can” is our mantra. But each week brings more shock waves as what we know to be true gets flamed.

I don’t know, said a client of mine used to life in the fast lane. The whole thing just makes you question your assumptions. ~~ You’ve made it doing what you knew worked. And you did it so well. But now the game has changed.

None of us are prepared for this economic tsunami and the new terrain it will leave in its wake. We've worked our entire lives in systems that never faced this level of strain.

Many of us are caught in shock-- with despairing paralysis threatening from the sidelines. Some of us are hiding out in isolation, either licking our wounds or processing, not sure what to do next. Others are gestating and concocting.

Carlos Santana quoted about his recent unexpected failed marriage after 34 yrs: “Right now, I’m still with the dark night of the soul. And I don’t know how its’ going to unfold. There is no clock, no script. What happens, happens on god’s time.”

Everyone asks what is going to happen in the future?

Advice and counsel is what we want most. However, the truth is none of us knows what lies ahead or has “the answers”. It would be nice but it just won’t be that easy to get back to the future. Are you still trying to live and lead in the fast lane but not really honoring the motion of our new circumstances and global eco-political realities?

These in-between times challenge us to look fear straight in the eye. It is imperative for us to experiment with the possibility of changing our long-held ideas about how everything we believe is true, so we can create something forged from the past yet articulating a new future.

What is clear is that this is a time of redemption and regeneration. We are smack dab in what I’ve long described as the coming breakdown. We either breakthrough or die. Every system sooner or later has to readjust and reinvent. That’s true for you and me too.

Expect faster and more frequent dramatic change as we move through this epoch-changing transition. Like storms raging across the planet, bad times don’t only bring ruin and loss; they also catalyze change and transformation. Without these breakdowns there would be no evolutionary breakthroughs.

What I am hearing from Washington these last few weeks could be cause of hope as we start looking at ways of reinventing our economy so that it’s not only about high profit margins but sustainable new technologies and more justice for all. We might be breaking through to a “greener economy” that could once again showcase America’s innovative brilliance and willingness to always move forward. Other changes seem to be on the horizon, like a phoenix rising from the dust of breakdown into a new and vital America. We’ve done it before. We can do it again.

However, as the pace of change has increased, the costs of being wrong-footed have also gone off the charts. What we all need now is to understand change, be able to futurecast and be conversant with risk and how to assess it. (That doesn’t mean being risky!)

Each of us has to custom-design our future all over again. But we don’t have to do it alone.

I cannot promise “the answers”, but what I can offer is to help you understand change as well as anticipate and influence the future…not control it, but move with it.

I know the questions to ask and what we can do to follow the Secrets of the Reinvention Masters™ — those I’ve studied, those I’ve known and my own-earned …as a reinvention master.

And key to the wisdom of reinvention is to never get stuck or paralyzed but to always find the pathway to action because motion is momentum and positive momentum leads to positive change and transformation.

Here's a gift for you that will really help.
