Karen's Quintessential Principle of Greatness May and June, 2006
 Part I - The Future Works |
 |
 |
 |
 |
| Our daughter's wedding was awesome! Celebrations like these crystallize what matters most. Cocooned within the hotel's paradise, the world stopped. For that brief respite, it was all about us.
But even in the best of times, gathering a re-formulated family together is always dicey. Worse, it's crazy-making. But what an opportunity to "walk my talk" about this Gazette's principle: Take a Big Picture View! Rather than get caught up in old woundings and family skeletons, I kept my sights on my daughter's radiant joy and the future unfolding.
Experience has shown me that what keeps us on the road to greatness, personally and professionally, is to have a set of core tenets that guide us when the going gets rough and when we are in our "zone".
Unleash Your Greatness. Lead for Greatness. Put time on y(our) side.

Is The "American Dream" Alive and Well?
|
|
It's no surprise that more viewers tuned in to see the finale of American Idol than voted in the last election. Sad but true. Americans are searching for answers, struggling with the state of the world, our economy…and our part in it. Thanks to Taylor Hicks, we all got a quick-fix of hope and promise that the "American Dream" was still alive and well!
But apparently, most of us don't share in it.
According to Career Innovation's Manifesto, a global survey of knowledge workers, Mick Jagger's lyrics, "I can't get no satisfaction." rings true for over 50% of the workforce.
Top Line Results of CI's Survey:
55% are dissatisfied with their sense of achievement at work
56% are dissatisfied with their ability to achieve work-life balance
52% are dissatisfied with their ability to gain new experiences
54% are dissatisfied with the way their skills are being used |
Although productivity is reported to be up again, a 50% dissatisfaction rate portends a devouring malaise in our leadership ranks and in our knowledge workforce.
Our lives require great clarity and demand enormous energy from each of us just to get through the day. Terror and outrage are our shadowy companions. Our schools, government and companies are on shaky grounds as our faith in the future is teetering. Just check the media headlines and opinion polls. Consumer confidence is at an all-time low. As CI's survey reflects, we are in a societal depression far more insidious than ever before.

5 STEPS TO A BIG PICTURE VIEW
Adair is at the top of her game, running the show. Corner office and all the perks. She's earned it. Now at 39 she's home free. All that's missing is a special someone. "That's next," she tells herself. Leaning back in her high back leather chair, she dreams of romantic get-aways. The phone rings. A colleague from years past wants to have lunch and talk about a new opportunity made just for her.
Adair's first inclination is to react instantaneously with an appreciative "Thanks but no thanks." But she has learned to listen to all offers. So instead she leaves the door open making sure her colleague gets that she is very happy where she is. It's not a ploy. Adair's really sure that she's just not interested in moving from where she is. In fact she implores me with,
"Why make changes? I've gotten what I wanted. I think I'll enjoy the ride for a while."
Enjoying the flattery, Adair shares her phone call with me. I ask questions. She ponders. I hit the jackpot when I ask her "What was left for her to do or reach where she is now?" We take a Big Picture View of her situation and what she wants for her future. Next we "future forward" Adair just far enough out so she can see her options and probable outcomes.
After examining the pros and cons her next steps become clear. The biggest negatives:
Her direct boss, the "Top Honcho" is retiring in the near future, which will potentially change her reporting lines. The industry she's in is vulnerable both to the fluctuations of the markets and nature. You guessed it. By taking a big picture view, she sees just how awesome the opportunity is .It incorporates everything she ever dreamed of and more. And she can even have a life!
So I ask you, "What satisfaction might you be missing because you have not take a big picture view?"
