And shaken to the core when our status quo evaporates and dreams seem out of reach.

Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn. Or his later book, My Ishamel. I read this years ago when it was an underground novel. A colleague reminded me of it recently. It felt right to read it again now. You will love this book cause you too want to make the future work.
